Guilty Pleasures

I do my best to eat healthy foods. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, many of them grown right here at HA. I eat mostly whole grain breads, and many whole grain dishes using rice, quinoa, bulgur, oats and other grains.

But I also have a sweet tooth, and that gets me into trouble. I know sugar is bad for me, and after watching Sugar: The Bitter Truth I understand why it’s more than just the calories that are bad.

So, why is it I crave things like this?

Or this?

animal crackers in my hand, and in my mouth

When I should be eating something like this apple!

And why do things like these chocolate Christmas candies fly off the shelf and into my hand (and mouth)?

Now that the weather is cooler, my wife and I enjoy an occasional cup of hot cocoa at night. Cocoa is pretty healthy, right? It’s got antioxidants. And we make it with skim milk, which is a good source of calcium. And we sweeten it with stevia, instead of sugar.

But then, I add marshmallows.

And top it off with whipped cream. Then sprinkle it with a little cinnamon. Mmm-mmm, that looks good!

My wife baked a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, using our homegrown neck pumpkin. That’s pretty healthy, right? It’s got beta-carotene, and fiber.

But it’s even better with whipped cream on top!

I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to tame my sweet tooth. Perhaps the best I can hope for is to at least limit the amount of sweets I eat.

Am I the only one with guilty pleasures? What about others – what are your guilty pleasures?

  1. OMG..they have choclote covered peeps?????!!!!

  2. I’m so excited I couldn’t even spell LOL

  3. Have you ever tried making your own marshmallows? They’re so much tastier than those bagged monstrosities, and I know you’re always up for a culinary challenge…if you milk the cow and whip the cream yourself, then your hot chocolate would be almost guilt-free 😉 I admit though, I have a bit of a sweet tooth too, it’s probably why I bake so much! I just need to convince myself to run more…

I’ve never tried to make marshmallows, though I have seen Alton Brown make them on Good Eats. We are considering getting a share of a milk cow. That way I could whip up the fresh cream myself!

While I am not a huge fan of candy a nice piece of homemade pie will always tempt me.:) Speaking of guilty pleasures, we are going to try making the parsnip tart from the Victory Garden Cookbook this next week (I hope)…it sounds so good.

I have a bad sweet tooth too. My husband brings me things that the cook at his work makes. She makes all sorts of things and they don’t eat them all. They are tossed, but my husband gets them before. Today it was sugar cookies. Bad. Bad. Bad.

I’m tempted by all kinds of sweets when I volunteer at the soup kitchen. Groceries and bakeries give us their “old” stuff, including a lot of cookies and cakes. It takes all my willpower to keep from chowing down on them! I tell myself that others need the calories far more than I do.

  6. My biggest downfall is home made chocolate chip cookies.

And I see nothing wrong with a nice dollop of whipped cream on pumpkin pie, or cocoa, or strawberries. Everything in moderation.
