Harvest Monday, March 29, 2010

This weeks harvest was pretty much All About Spinach. I harvested over 2 pounds of it, and it went into a variety of dishes.

We made some fresh whole wheat spinach pasta, which turned out a lovely shade of bright green. We made another batch of plain whole wheat pasta, and we cut both of these by hand into broad noodle shapes. We mixed them together and they cooked in no time.

I served this with some 2009 marinara sauce from the freezer. I made some Parmesan spinach cakes to go with the pasta, using some of our homemade ricotta cheese. It all made for a meal that would have made Popeye proud!

I also harvested a little bit of choy sum, the last of the Golden pak choi and a few salad greens.

So this weeks harvest tally is:

Asian greens(13 oz)

Spinach(36 oz)

Lettuce and salad greens (6 oz)

Total Harvest 3.9 lbs

That looks very lovely! Makes me think there should be an Iron Chef – Home Garden Edition.

To Karen: they did a version of the Iron Chef garden style once. They used things from Michelle Obama’s kitchen garden. I thought they were cheating though, since they used things that she grew and not things that were necessarily in her garden at the time. I would love a garden cooking show though it would be great fun. It could go through all the seasons.

And I love the meal too. It is a great garden meal. It really makes me want some spinach. Maybe tomorrow night for dinner I’ll bring out some of my frozen.

  3. Those parmesan spinach cakes look fantastic. I am going to that link now to see how you made it. Our youngest is celiac so I don’t make pasta anymore (I guess I could try) but I do miss how wonderful it tastes.

I pretty much followed the recipe for the spinach cakes (a rare thing for me) except I added a little grated nutmeg.

Yum~~~~~ l like you garden meal, so delicious and pretty too.
Yeah it would be nice to have a home garden cooking show, did Martha Steward do that sometime ago?

  5. michelle says:

Oh that looks so good, I like the green pasta mixed with the regular pasta. I’m sure that the spinach cake recipe would be great with other greens also, like the rapa that is growing like crazy in my garden right now.

  6. Villager, your Harvest Monday posts always leave me thinking about lunch! Your parmesan spinach cakes look absolutely wonderful! All we harvested today were 27 baby chicks from the post office 😛
