Harvest Monday February 26, 2024

It’s time once again for Harvest Monday, where we celebrate all things harvest related. I only had one small but tasty harvest last week – a scallion I pulled for use in soup. I’ve been pulling these fall planted onions for a couple of months now, but I rarely get a photo of them. Since it was my only harvest of the week I made an exception with this one. These are the Forum onion sets I planted last year in spring and in fall, and they have done quite well for me both as scallions and as young spring onions.

Last week I baked a loaf of crusty sourdough bread using heirloom Rouge de Bordeaux flour. The hard part was waiting for it to cool before I could taste it! I used my version of the Breadtopia no-knead recipe and baked it in their oval clay baker. It made great croutons for the Ribollita Soup I made for a couple of dinner meals. I sliced and froze the rest of the loaf for later use.

In other news, the first daffodils are blooming – which are a welcome sign of spring after a dreary winter! Our hellebores are beginning to open up too, another of our favorite early bloomers that show up about the same time as the daffodils.

I was happy to see a male bluebird at our feeders on Saturday, along with the Red-Bellied Woodpecker. Both birds are frequent visitors to our feeders, and the mix of suet and seeds I put out seems to attract a wide variety of birds.
