Harvest Monday July 21, 2025

It’s time for Harvest Monday, where gardeners from all over celebrate all things harvest related. The weather has been hot and miserable here, and then it started raining pretty much every day. We got just under six inches alone last week, which is more than we would normally get in the whole month of July. I have accepted the fact it’s going to be a horrible year for gardening here, and I will try and be thankful for whatever we can harvest. That said, the eggplant and cucumbers are keeping us well supplied, and I got a few tomatoes plus the last of the spring planted kohlrabi last week.

We have been roasting the eggplant and used it to make eggplant sandwiches one day for lunch. We use a piece of toasted naan bread for a base, spread with mashed avocado. Topped with pieces of roasted eggplant and a slice of cheese, it makes for a tasty treat we really enjoy.

The summer lettuce is hanging in there. I have more seeds started, but it will be mostly a fall crop. These are a mix of summer crisp types in this harvest.

I did get the first Tromboncino squash last week, plus a few spring onions and some Pot-a-peno hot peppers.

I spiralized the Tromboncino, and cooked it in a bit of olive oil. It served as a base for a spaghetti sauce I made using some of our frozen tomato sauce from last year.

In other news, the bluebirds have been busy and now have a third brood in the PVC nest box. This round had four babies, which is about the norm for a third brood in my experience.

And I’ll close with a pic of our Peppermint Flare hardy hibiscus. It is a fairly recent addition to our perennial bed, and has been blooming almost daily recently. The blooms only last for one day each, but they make for a stunning display when they open.

Harvest Monday July 14, 2024

It’s time for Harvest Monday, where gardeners from all over celebrate all things harvest related. The cucumbers and eggplant are still playing starring roles here, and we have been getting enough of both to keep us supplied and to share some with friends.

morning harvest

I cut a few of the summer lettuces to use for salads and sandwiches. They weren’t full sized, but plenty big enough to use.

It’s not going to be a good year for the summer squashes. They are suffering from the same wet conditions that the spring brassicas did, since they are both in the same bed. We are enjoying the yellow Tempest squashes though, and they seem to be faring better than the zucchinis so far.

another morning harvest

The berries are pretty much done for here, but something new came along – the first tomatoes! This was just a few each of Sunpeach, Cherry Bomb and Sun Sugar.

Another first was the Wildcat hot pepper. It’s a big cayenne type, though not nearly as hot as most cayenne peppers I have grown.

And in non-harvest news, the hardy hibiscus are beginning to put on their annual show. This one is Midnight Marvel, with large red blooms on medium tall plants.

Harvest Monday July 7, 2025

It’s time for Harvest Monday, where gardeners from all over celebrate all things harvest related. I’ve been suffering from a summer cold bug the last few days, but the harvests keep coming in regardless of how I feel. My wife is helping out, especially with watering chores. Rain is forecast for this coming week so that should help a bit. Before I got sick, I pulled more kohlrabi and brought in squashes, cucumbers and eggplant. The raspberries are still trickling in, and we also got more blackberries and blueberries last week.

The greenhouse cucumbers are not slowing down though, and I got enough last week to share with others. I also got one of the Starry Night acorn squashes.

The container eggplants haven’t slowed down either, and while they require daily watering the plants are rewarding us with plenty to eat.

I’m just beginning to cut a few of the summer lettuce plants. These are holding up well in the heat, and they get a bit of afternoon shade which helps. I just sowed seeds indoors for another round so I can hopefully keep a succession of plants coming on.

I found time to bake a loaf of Easy Everyday Sourdough Bread  last week. I used heirloom Rouge de Bordeaux flour along with KA Bread Flour, and it baked up nice and tall. It should make a good base for our sandwiches and for croutons.

Harvest Monday June 30, 2025

It’s time for Harvest Monday, where gardeners from all over celebrate all things harvest related. The weather here has been hot and dry, and with excessive heat warnings for every day all last week. I’m doing the minimum amount of gardening work outside, and watering late in the afternoons when the sun is less intense. So far the garden is holding on in the heat, and rain is expected in the coming days. I got quite a few cucumbers from the greenhouse last week, plus enough summer squash to keep us supplied for fresh eating. I also made a baked dish using spiralized yellow squash and zucchini and topped with a mix of ricotta and parmesan cheeses with chopped fresh basil added.

The raspberries are winding down even as the blackberries are beginning to ripen. I got enough for us to eat fresh last week, and we will begin freezing extra blackberries as they come in.

The blueberries are trickling in and we are enjoying them for fresh eating.

Last week I got a couple of the small Gimlet cucumbers I have growing in the greenhouse. These have a tender skin and mild tasting flesh, and are much like a smaller version of the Mojito cukes I have been harvesting. Both are new varieties here this year, and so far both are doing quite well for me.

The container eggplants continue to give us harvests. We roasted some of them last week to make open-faced eggplant sandwiches.

I got one giant Kossak kohlrabi weighing over two pounds last week. There are a few more trying to size up, but it looks like there won’t be a lot. I usually use these big ones for fermenting.

I pulled the last of the Konstance kohlrabi from their beds. This one is a 2025 AAS Winner and did quite well here this year. Some of this batch may wind up getting fermented too.

In the smallest harvest department, I got a ripe Pot-a-Peno hot pepper I have growing in a container. This should add a bit of kick to a jar of fermented kohlrabi.

Harvest Monday June 23, 2025

It’s time for Harvest Monday, where gardeners from all over celebrate all things harvest related. The weather here has turned dry, but with that came excessive heat warnings for our area and much of the U.S. I’m doing gardening work as early as possible in the mornings, usually before I eat my breakfast. The garden is still ramping up production, and this week I got the first eggplants from the container plantings. There will be more soon, and the plants are loaded with blooms and setting lots of fruit. We typically get several pounds of eggplant from these before the in-ground plantings begin to bear.

And raspberries are still keeping us well supplied. I have to say they have been thriving on neglect, as I have done very little to them since planting other than to trim out the dead canes when they are done fruiting.

It’s not going to be a great year for the blueberries though, but my wife found a few ripe ones which we shared. We lost a couple of the bushes over the winter, and we have decided not to replant any new ones.

first blueberries

It does look like a pretty good year for kohlrabi though, at least the ones I have planted behind the greenhouse. This batch included the purple skinned Konstance (2025 AAS Winner), the white skinned Beas, and a couple of Terek.

We had another first last week, a great first harvest of the greenhouse cucumbers. There are three varieties I’ve gotten so far, and from small to large they are Mini Munch, Mojito and Nokya.

first cucumbers

It’s my first time growing the Mojito variety. They are medium sized with a lime-green skin and a mild flavor. I’m a fan so far, and I turned some of these into Quick Refrigerator Pickles.

I got a few more squashes last week, both zucchini and the yellow Tempest. I haven’t started freezing any yet, but I hope to do so as more start coming in.

summer squashes

I made a pasta dish with some of the summer squashes. Baked Ziti & Summer Veggies is one of my favorites, with ricotta and mozzarella cheeses and both yellow squash and zucchini. Some of our fresh basil really perks up the flavor of this one!

And in the non-harvest wildlife sighting department, our big native mulberry tree is loaded with mulberries and every critter is feasting on the ones that drop to the ground. Deer are frequent visitors, but last week I saw a skunk and a newcomer to the garden – a gray fox. I had to zoom in the get the photo, because I didn’t want it to run off. It did run  eventually and I was singing Tom T Hall’s classic “Fox On The Run” for days!

My big challenge this week will be to keep things alive in the greenhouse and outside. The heat wave is expected to last pretty much all week, and I will be trying to keep me and the plants cool until more normal weather returns – whatever that is these days!
