Harvest Monday July 24, 2023

It’s time once again for Harvest Monday, where we celebrate all things harvest related. After seeming to be on the mend last week I took a turn backwards after a few days. A visit to the doctor gave me the good news that I didn’t have the flu or Covid-19, but a chest x-ray showed I had pneumonia. At least that explains my cough, fatigue and lack of appetite. I am taking meds which should help, and meanwhile getting lots of rest. I have managed to harvest a few things, but I have to say that even doing that leaves me worn out most of the time. The squash plants don’t care though, and keep pumping out more squashes.

I also cut the last head of the Sweet and Tender cabbage that weighed five pounds. I knew it was getting big, but surprised to see it weighed that much! That will make a lot of slaw, and I can always freeze some of it too.

When I cut the cabbage I also pulled the last of the Kossak kohlrabis. This one was also a giant, and weighed over three pounds. A second one weighed almost as much.

The cherry tomatoes have finally begun ripening, and I picked an assortment of them last week. The tomato vines are loaded, and it looks to be a good year for them with more ripening soon. It was Sun Sugar, Sunpeach, Cherry Bomb, Purple Zebra and Prairie Fire in this first batch, and we enjoyed them all.

It’s been a good year so far for eggplant too, and I got enough of them to make open-faced eggplant sandwiches one day for lunch. I also picked a few ripe Pot-a-peno peppers that day.

Since I’ve been feeling under the weather, comfort food has been on the menu often. I had the energy to put together another batch of Baked Ziti & Summer Veggies using our yellow squash and zucchini. The combo of the squash and pasta plus a cheesy mix of ricotta, mozzarella and Parmesan is tasty and filling.

Harvest Monday is a day to show off your harvests, how you are saving your harvest, or how you are using your harvest. If you have a harvest you want to share, add your name and blog link to Mr Linky below. And please check out what everyone is harvesting!

Oh jeez, Dave, hope the meds do their job soon and you recover fully. You’ll need your strength to haul in those big harvests! That kohlrabi is a monster. Have you grown Purple Zebra before? I’m trying it this year.

    • Dave @ HappyAcres says:

Thanks Will. I grew Purple Zebra last year and it was productive and the winner of many HA taste tests! I hope it does well for you too.

So sorry that you are feeling unwell. Were you inniculated against pneumonia? The pasta dish looks delicious. U’m giving bucket loads of courgettes away.
I hope that you are soon back on form.

    • Dave @ HappyAcres says:

Thanks Sue. Yes, I did get the pneumonia vaccine, but this may be the bacterial kind. The pasta dish is a keeper, and I want to try it with other veggies too.

  3. Veg looking good Dave, but I hope you recover soon. I can’t believe that I beat you to tomatoes this year! : All the best – Steve
