Our recent weather has turned cold and wet. This week we had snow, sleet, freezing rain and ice coming down over a two day period, and it left everything outside covered in a coat of ice. The grill is just outside our back door, and it and the deck around it are covered and quite slippery.

This is the first ice event for the new greenhouse. It is holding up well, and the pitched roof made for an interesting display of hanging ice.

I have a metal shepherd’s hook that I use for hold hanging baskets of flowers, usually petunias. It shows just how much ice has accumulated.

The grass is covered in ice, and crunches when you walk on it. It’s slippery as well.

I haven’t gone out to check on the vegetable garden. With temps below freezing, harvests are out of the question. Of course the winter greens are likely covered in ice too. The tomato cages by the side of the greenhouse tell the story.

I have ventured out to stock up the bird feeders. I have a couple hanging on a dogwood tree, and the tree is sagging under the weight of the ice. It is pretty though, and the birds are visiting the feeders as they usually do.

The worst of it is the cold. We are in single digits with nights headed to minus 7 or so
I haven’t been able to check on the garden or greenhouse in over a week but I had picked most of the healthy greens just before the worst of it. I also pulled most of my carrots. I left some all buried in straw to see if they survive. Well see. Won’t we be happy to see Spring come again?! Cheers!
I am surely ready for spring! Winter hadn’t been too bad, then all of a sudden it was terrible.
It’s very pretty but not much fun when you have to be out in it.

Some lovely photos there Dave! We’ve had our coldest weather that I can remember, but then I’ve only really paid it much attention since I started gardening 5 years ago. By comparison with your weather, it’s probably nothing to worry about, but for us -6c in the polytunnel, with a wind-chill of -11c outside is exceptionally cold and the outdoor brassicas have really suffered. The beans look dead, so I’m sowing more tomorrow and everything is desiccated by the wind and constantly frozen ground. That said, under cover, everything is fine and we have plenty of fresh food to eat : All the best – Steve
This year we haven’t had any significant icy weather – it’s been all about the snow, which is just fine by me! We dread ice storms around here – bad memories of the multi-day power outage that we had a few years ago, I believe it was around Christmas. It is beautiful, though.
Oh I do remember those days in January and February in Massachusetts. Good times to hunker down in a warm house.
