The results are in from the “first tomato to ripen” race, and as I predicted last month, the winner is Sun Gold. Coming in close behind was Supersweet 100. The third place finisher is yet to be determined.
It was only a handful, but it’s a great start. Wishing you happy growing, and may all your tomatoes be as tasty as these first ones were!
Awesome! ours are still all green but hope to try first cherry tomato on 4th of July.
Oh man, I’m jealous. We have some early girls that are getting close but both our sun sugar and sweeties are still weeks away!!!!
Jenny & Rick – they’ll be ready before you know it. Go tomatoes!
Lucky you!! I think it will be awhile before I have any ripe tomatoes 🙁
YAY! I’m just getting my seeds ready for sowing – only 6 months to go til I’ll have home grown tomatoes again….sigh….
I am so jealous! I have a small cluster of Fourth of July salad tomatoes that should be ready in a few weeks, but everything else is either at blossom stage or extremely tiny, including my sungolds. But your beautiful photos hold the promise of things to come! Can’t wait!
Sungolds was the winner in my garden too!
Unrelated to tomatoes, the bluebirds have 5 eggs in their third nest. It’s been quite a year for them too!
mortgage Lifter won the race in my garden by a week. I have four varieties racing neck and neck for that second place spot. They are Black Plum, Big Russian Paste, Super Marzano Paste and Amish Paste. Not sure I’ll be able to call it without a photo finish.
I just love a good tomato race like that!
yup, sungold one at our house too as the first of the season.
my garden also gifted me with two ‘early girl’ slicers on the solstice! and five ripe sauce tomatoes yesterday (a mixture of varieties).
i’m wondering what this heat will do.
