A Day To Remember, Eat Hummus

Today my wife and I are celebrating the anniversary of our first date. Six years ago, we met at a local restaurant for dinner. I’m guessing a lot of people don’t remember the first words they ever spoke to their spouses. Most likely they are shrouded by the foggy mists of time. But I doubt that we will ever forget my own first words.

Because, upon seeing my future wife for the first time, I blurted out “Hi Karen”. The only problem was, her name is Lynda!!! I realized my faux pas as soon as the words left my mouth. I blamed it on nervousness, and joked about it the rest of the evening. One thing is for certain – I had nowhere to go but up after that shaky beginning!

Once we were seated, and had time to look at the menu, I committed my second blunder of the evening. What egregious mistake did I make then? I ordered hummus for an appetizer! I didn’t realize it at the time, but Lynda thought I was pretty “extravagant” for ordering the hummus. I just thought it was a nice touch, and it would give us something to munch on while we waited for the main course.

We can both laugh about it now. That first date led to a second date, then a third, and now I am married to the love of my life. I truly had no idea how much my life would change after that date. If I had, I likely would have been even more nervous than I was!

So tonight we will celebrate by going to our new favorite Mediterranean restaurant.  It’s possible we will order hummus. We do both like it. Plus it’s cheaper at this place, so it won’t be so extravagant! We’ll go in the little red convertible I had just bought before we met. My friends told me it would be a “chick magnet”. They were so right! And who knows, maybe she’ll wear her cat socks and Birkies, and I’ll dust off my favorite Hawaiian shirt.

I might even call her Karen before the day is over. Just so we don’t forget, you know?

Oh how sweet that you remembered. I remember my first date with my husband, though nothing that either of us said. We went to a Kansas concert. My husband probably wanted to impress me. We were in the eighth row. And we were so quiet compared to the rest of the crowd that the bouncers brought us up to the front. It was very amusing. I guess they knew we wouldn’t storm the stage or something. The others they kept away from the stage. We have never been to another concert since. Really rock concerts are neither of our styles. Now take me to a musical and I’d be in heaven.

Thanks for your kind wishes everyone! We had a great day, with hummus for dinner appetizer and frozen yogurt for dessert. It’s probably a good thing we didn’t meet two days later on on April Fools Day. I could have gotten in even more trouble then! 😉
