Welcome to Harvest Monday, where we celebrate all things harvest related. It’s still lettuce season here, and we are enjoying our salads while it lasts. I cut a head each of Simpson Elite and Red Sails last week for wilted lettuce salads.

I also cut a mix of red types from a salad box in the greenhouse. Some colored up more than others, but all added a bit of color to our salad bowls.

Snow peas are still coming on. We’ve been mostly stir frying them, either with other veggies or by themselves. I don’t know how long they’ll last in the hot weather we’ve been having, but so far they are holding up. I plan on planting them again in August for a fall crop. There’s also a couple of tiny side shoots from my buttoning broccoli plant. The first real heads should be ready by tomorrow.

I also cut several pac choi plants. I’ve got two kinds of baby choi planted in a window box planter that are ready to harvest. The white stemmed Toy Choi is bolting, but the green stemmed Li Ren Choi is holding up better. I added them both to a tofu and veggies stir fry I made one night for dinner.

Though they are edible, I cut the flower stalks off the Toy Choi because they were a little older than I like and I thought they might be tough.

The Li Ren Choi are perfectly formed at the baby stage. Since I almost always chop them up before cooking, I’m not sure it really matters what size they are. It is probably more useful for us to have small or medium sized ones rather than a giant like Joi Choi.

I’m also pulling spring onions as needed. When I set out my plants (from Dixondale) this spring, I set out some extras to be pulled as scallions/spring onions. The one in the below photo is Candy. It’s nice to have the young onions, and I use them in a number of things.

I’ve got no pics to share, but my wife and I made a quick trip to Nashville on Saturday to see a show at the Ryman Auditorium. Not being hockey fans, we were unaware that game three of the Stanley Cup playoffs was being played downtown on Saturday night and it was chaotic there to say the least. We were there to see Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter and the Indigo Girls performing at the start of their Four Voices tour. For a while it seemed like I was back in the 60’s listening (and singing along) to songs like Deportee (Woody Guthrie) and The Times They Are A Changin’ (Bob Dylan). But they also dropped in a few new songs, and it made for an enjoyable evening before we drove back to Happy Acres yesterday.
