It’s time once again for Harvest Monday, where we celebrate all things harvest related. It’s still salad season here for us. It’s my first time growing Navara lettuce, and this red oakleaf type is doing quite well for me. It’s making heavier heads than some, and the leaves are more substantial than most oakleaf lettuce I’ve grown in the past, and I think that is a good thing.

I’ve been growing Panisse lettuce for several years now, and the lime green leaves are lighter in weight than Navara with a buttery texture. The two varieties work quite well together in the salad bowl, and I believe both will be in my plans going forward.

It’s about time to pull the over-wintered parsley in the greenhouse, but I just can’t resist cutting all I can while I still can. This cutting went into a batch of Ikarian Tabouli I made for lunch one day, and I plan to make pesto with some of it this coming week to go in a pasta dish.

The spring arugula is doing well now, and I cut Apollo and Speedy last week for use on a pizza. The serrated leaves of Speedy look like a wild arugula, but they are quite mild tasting. Like the name implies it is fast maturing, though Apollo is growing at about the same pace.

We are cutting asparagus on a daily basis now. The yields are not huge, but enough to keep us well supplied for the next month or so. We love asparagus, and some of this lot was grilled for our dinner last night and served along with planked salmon. I plan to use more in the pesto pasta dish I have on the menu for later this week.

Navara, is one of my top 3 lettuces, it’s a great all rounder, mine is deep red though, with the cold weather : All the best – Steve
I first heard about Navara from you Steve. I can see why you like it so much! It’s fairly warm in our spring greenhouse so it’s hard to get red lettuce to color up then.
Navara, does well for us in summer, but our favourite in the heat is Maravilla De Verano Canasta, a wonderful crispy lettuce, with good colour and works well harvested a leaf at a time
I need to remind myself to push the season next year and get some greens out earlier. I had good intentions, starting some lettuce seeds inside in early March, but it was old seed and none was viable, so I had to start over again in April. Just set out my first heading lettuce seedlings last night. I wish it was green salad season here, but I’ll have to rely on the farmer’s market, which starts up again this week!
Too bad about the lettuce seed Liz. It doesn’t seem to keep as long as most other seeds.
The tabouli looks great. I’ve got the parsley so should make some. I should check Navara with the high recs from you and Steve Richards.

They are quick to ship also. I have received my seeds, sown them in a plug tray where they are beginning to sprout. Thanks for the tip on this variety! Like you say, Seeds From Italy seed packets usually have lots of seeds, and interesting varieties as well.
Let me know how they go, mine are being harvested tomorrow and after all this fierce weather will probably be a bit bitter, but come milder conditions in summer we love them. Actually we also have some under cover and they are already summer quality
Seeing your asparagus Dave made me go and check mine… a couple of little shoots coming along, but as it is only its second year , no feasting here yet! I’ll have to enjoy looking at yours instead!
My attempts at hardening off our lettuce to get it into the ground sooner rather than later have been thwarted these past couple of week by less than welcoming weather. So I’ll just look at your gorgeous leaves and salivate, lol 😉
